Is Your Application Process Costing You Talent?

Recruiting can be a challenging and overwhelming process. You’re often sifting through hundreds of resumes and trying to pinpoint the ideal candidate. As a result, it’s not always easy to make a decision. But it’s important to know that an overly long or challenging application process can cause top talent to drop off and result in you missing out on potential candidates.

How it Hurts Your Company

An article from The Telegraph references a study that surveyed 2,000 people asking what their reaction would be to a negative experience from a company’s application process. According to their findings, “More than half of the 2,000 adults questioned said they would share a negative experience in some way, and a further 28 percent are likely to share a negative experience with family and friends.”

An unpleasant application process could tarnish your company’s reputation and dissuade top talent from applying for a position in the future. Not to mention, you’re likely to lose key talent that has already applied for a current opening. It’s not a good situation, but there are some steps you can take to ensure you don’t make this mistake.

Streamlining Recruiting

Always be detailed when writing a job description. Be specific about the full scope of a potential employee’s responsibilities, and be upfront about tasks that aren’t so glamorous. Also be clear about the precise education and/or experience level that’s required. This should filter out candidates and allow you to evaluate them more effectively, thus streamlining recruiting.

At the same time, don’t make the application process needlessly lengthy or complex. Only include the elements that are truly necessary. It’s also smart to have multiple team members review it and provide feedback on what should be condensed or modified.

Don’t Leave Candidates Hanging

Most applicants would  the period between the interview and being offered a job is the most frustrating. Waiting and not knowing can be incredibly stressful, and they may be in a state of limbo and apply elsewhere.

You can do your applicants (as well as your brand reputation) a big favor by explaining how long it will be until you make a decision and letting them know once you’ve made a one. Don’t leave them waiting in suspense, because this only creates resentment.

Inefficiencies in your recruiting process can hurt your business in multiple ways. By simplifying and streamlining things, you can reduce friction for applicants and fill positions in a timely manner.
