How Can You Help Employees Reach Goals?

As an employer, you should be invested in the personal success of your employees. Helping them reach their goals has a positive impact on your company and improves overall performance. Here are some strategies to help employees reach their goals.

Write Down Goals

Most experts would agree an integral part of reaching goals is to write them down. This brings clarity and enables employees to see “the big picture,” both of which are essential for developing an actionable plan and beginning the sequence of steps needed to turn a goal into reality. It also creates a sense of accountability, which increases the likelihood of things coming to fruition.

Break Large Goals Down Into Smaller Ones

If you examine some of the world’s most successful leaders, champions, etc., you’ll see an overarching trend. They have the distinct ability to break large goals down into smaller, more manageable steps.

Trying to do everything at once becomes incredibly overwhelming. But when there’s a game plan that can be carried out in small increments, a goal becomes much more attainable. Spend some time with your employees and help them figure out the best course of action. Then work with them to determine which small goals they should focus their attention on.

Provide “Supportive Autonomy”

Often, there’s a fine line between being helpful and micromanaging your employees. There’s an article from The Harvard Business Review that discusses the importance of offering hands-on help while still giving your employees the necessary space to do things their own way and ultimately thrive.

Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School, Linda Hill says, “A manager’s job is to provide ‘supportive autonomy’ that’s appropriate to the person’s level of capability.” Try to keep this in mind when employees are working toward their goals, and be ready to take a step back if necessary.

Celebrate Small Successes

Odds are your employees will have a series of small victories along the way. It’s just as important to celebrate the minor successes because this keeps your team feeling confident and empowered. So be sure to keep your employees encouraged and motivated by treating each milestone as its own unique accomplishment.

Your employees’ success and personal growth are interrelated to your company’s long-term progress. For this reason, you’ll want to do everything possible to help your employees reach their goals. Implementing these strategies ensures you’re doing your part to make those goals a reality and expedite progress.
