Want to Be More Productive? Try This strategy.

Technology has permeated the lives of most Americans.  As a nation, we seem to be obsessed with technology. Network World even mentions the average smartphone user clicks, taps or swipes their device 2,617 times a day.

While technology definitely has its perks, it can hinder productivity when used in excess. Here’s how disconnecting from technology can allow you to focus on the task at hand and boost productivity.

Top Productivity Killers

We generally associate technology with increased productivity. But it has its limitations. When taken too far, technology can be distracting and prevent you from fully immersing yourself in a particular task. In 2016, Career Builder conducted a study to determine the top 10 productivity killers at work.

Unsurprisingly, four of the top 10 were technology related:

  • Cell phone/texting was the biggest issue with 55 percent of employees citing it as a productivity killer
  • The internet was second – 41 percent
  • Social media was fourth – 37 percent
  • Email – 26 percent

This research goes to show the various ways technology can reduce your productivity.

Maximizing Your Focus

It’s not hard to be distracted when you have your smartphone within arm’s reach or social media just a click away. One of the best ways to be more focused is to temporarily disconnect from technology. This enables you to brainstorm more effectively, be more creative and crystallize your thinking.

When you know turning to tech isn’t an option, you’re free to engage more fully and can focus on the task at hand. You may be surprised at what you can achieve when you simply unplug from your gadgets for a while.

Tips for Disconnecting

Taking periodic breaks from technology has really caught on as of late. Some people are even taking it as far as engaging in full-on digital sabbaticals where they completely avoid tech for a weekend or longer. While this may not be practical in the workplace, you can make it a point to disconnect for at least half an hour each day. Put anything that could be tempting out of sight so you don’t feel compelled to use it.

Then use that time to focus on a specific task, brainstorm or tie up any loose ends on a project. At first, it may seem difficult. But it gets easier with time, and you’ll be thrilled with the level of productivity you’re able to achieve.

Technology is a double-edged sword and is something that should always be kept in check. Taking periodic breaks can level up your productivity and give your mind a chance to cool down.
