How to Highlight Your Safety Qualifications

Being safety minded is one of the most important traits you can have, especially when it comes to light industrial positions. Most employers will give preference to candidates with a proven dedication to safety and a positive safety record. That’s why it’s so beneficial to highlight any positions or certifications that showcase your safety qualifications.

Resume

You’ll want to start with your resume. If you have multiple certifications, create a “Certifications” section using a subheader. There you should list the specific certifications you have received.

Or if you only have one certification, include it under “Education” or “Accomplishments.” Just be sure you’re clear about the specific name of the certification, where you received it from and the date. Here’s an example:

  • OSHA Certification (Multi Industry / Health & Safety) 2015

Cover Letter

A cover letter by nature should be brief, so you don’t have time to explain every detail. But it’s a good idea to quickly highlight the fact you’re certified in a safety-related area. For instance, you might say the following:

“I have been working in light industrial roles for seven years and obtained OSHA Certification in 2015.”

The key is to quickly touch on your safety qualifications to pique the interest of an employer, but not go overboard with excessive information. You might also want to say, “Please reference my resume for more on my safety qualifications.” In terms of placement on your cover letter, this should go after your introduction and before your call-to-action.

Interview

Let’s say you’ve impressed a recruiter enough to land an interview. You want to spend some time discussing your credentials as they relate to safety. Just look for the right opening in your conversation to touch on this subject. Also, try to tie in how your qualifications would help you succeed in the specific job that you’re applying for. This is essential.

Safety qualifications are very much in demand for light industrial jobs. If you have relevant certifications or a positive safety record, this can give you a decided edge over other candidates. Highlighting those qualifications using the tips above can increase your chances of impressing an employer and ultimately being chosen for a job.
