Get your working papers if you’re under 18.
In some states, you need to have the right papers in place before an employer will consider you for legal employment. Get them now, so you’re able to accept the jobs that do come your way.
Think about the type of jobs you want.
There might not be as many opportunities out there this summer. However, it’s still important to consider the ones that would be a good fit for you. For instance, take into account what you’re getting your degree in or what kind of career you want in the future and look for jobs that support those efforts. Or simply make sure that the position is a good match for your interests.
Ask for referrals from friends.
When it comes to temporary jobs, reach out to those you know who have had summer positions in the past you’re interested in. Ask them to refer you to their employers for openings. A referral from an existing worker is going to carry far more weight than an application from a stranger.
Put together a resume and cover letter.
Just because it’s a summer job doesn’t mean that you don’t have to worry about a resume or cover letter. Some employers will ask that you submit these to be considered for openings. If you don’t have a lot of work experience, focus on your education credentials, as well as any internships or volunteer experiences you have.
Talk to a career or guidance counselor.
If you’re in school, then use the resources that you have to get help finding a temporary summer job. This includes guidance or career counselors who will know what local employers hire during the season and also which opportunities will be the right fit for you.
