Help Attract Millennial Workers With These Tips

Millennials already account for a sizable portion of the overall workforce. By 2020, they will make up nearly half (46 percent) of it. This is why it’s important you understand how to attract millennial workers and make them a focal point of your recruiting efforts. Here are some tips for doing so.

Utilize Technology

It may sound cliché, but younger workers in their 20s and early 30s tend to be heavy technology users. So if you’re still using antiquated, old-school recruiting techniques, it’s likely to have only a minimal impact. To effectively attract millennials, list your job ads on the places they most frequent. Some examples include:

  • Social media (LinkedIn and Facebook in particular)
  • Mobile apps
  • Inbound digital content such as industry blogs

Have a Tech-Centric Workplace

In keeping with the theme of technology, it’s important to remember that millennials are the first generation that has grown up with a variety of tech devices. Whether it’s a computer, tablet or smartphone, they’re wired to use technology. For this reason, it’s fair to say that most millennials would prefer working for an employer who’s tech-centric over one who’s outdated and antiquated.

Offer Flexible Scheduling

Having a healthy work/life balance is a priority for most millennials. Many are less willing to work the long workweeks that their parents were so accustomed to and are more prone to suffer from burnout and exhaustion.

One of the best selling points you can have is flexible scheduling where millennials have some wiggle room in terms of the number of hours they work. For example, giving them the option of working only 30 hours rather than 45 can work to your advantage. You may also want to give them the option of swapping shifts with co-workers.

Offer Telecommuting Opportunities

Just five years ago, employees working remotely via the internet was pretty rare. Now it’s becoming the norm, and it has climbed up to 37 percent as of 2015. While it may not be realistic to allow telecommuting for all job tasks, it can really work to your benefit if you have at least some telecommuting opportunities. This can really help your cause if you’re one of the only companies among your primary competitors that allows employees to work remotely.

With the right approach, you can efficiently attract millennials with your recruiting. Doing so is important in the long run as this generation continues to emerge and account for a large percentage of the workforce.
