Five Basic – Yet Critical – Interview Questions to Prepare For

Although you never know exactly which questions will come your way during a job interview, there is a certain sense of predictability to the process. Most recruiters will draw from a standard list of questions to assess your value as a job candidate. Here are five common interview questions you should prepare for and how to answer them to wow your recruiter.

  1. Why should I hire you?

This gives you an opportunity to immediately sell yourself and prove you would be a tremendous asset. Highlight specific skills and talents that correlate with the job you’re applying for. Also, explain how your philosophy and values align with the company’s culture.

  1. Why do you want to work here?

Of course you want a job and a paycheck, but you’ll want to dig much deeper than that to show your recruiter you’re deeply motivated. The main thing a company is looking for here is passion. They want to know you would be genuinely excited if you landed the job, so prove that you’re passionate about it.

  1. What’s your biggest weakness?

This is one of the trickiest questions you’ll encounter. Many people handle this question the wrong way and come across as being insincere. For example, they may say something like, “I get so engrossed in my work that I become a workaholic.” A better response is to point out a legitimate weakness and show how you’re working to overcome it.

  1. What do you know about our company?

A recruiter wants to know you’re interested and have taken the time to perform some preliminary research about their company. What you don’t want to do is rehash what it says on the company website’s “About” page. Instead, get a feel for their history, culture, philosophy, etc., by reading their blog, visiting their social media accounts, YouTube videos or anywhere else that you can gain an up-close glimpse of the company.

  1. How do you handle workplace adversity?

If you land the job, you will inevitably face challenges and stressful situations at some point. A recruiter wants to know you won’t crack under pressure. The best way to handle this question is to provide specific obstacles you’ve faced in the past and explain how you overcame them.

Being prepared for an interview should make you more confident and capable of handling whatever comes your way. These five questions are especially common, yet are vital to impressing a recruiter. It’s smart to rehearse you answers so you can answer them effectively and without delay. In turn, this should make you a frontrunner and increase your chances of landing a job.
